Clean the air without harmful ozone pollution?

Modern air purifiers use a multi-stage filtration system to capture and neutralize coarse to microscopic particles. A mechanical pre-filter takes care of coarser contaminants in the air such as dust, pollen, spores, lint, hair and insects. The following “High Efficiency Particulate Air” (HEPA) filter captures smallest particles like viruses or germs and keeps them solid. QooXoo air purifiers also use an innovative silver/copper anion technology that gently destroys viruses and germs. An activated carbon filter absorbs unpleasant odors such as smoke.

Filter viruses, how does it work?

According to the WHO definition, viruses are not living organisms because they do not have their own metabolism. For reproduction and “transport”, the virus therefore requires a host cell or aerosols (particles) in the air .

The spectrum of particles excreted varies when breathing, singing, coughing or sneezing. Normal breathing produces mainly small particles (< 5 µm). When speaking and singing, more such particles are excreted compared to breathing, while coughing and sneezing additionally produce larger particles up to 100 µm in diameter and more.

Coronaviruses themselves have a diameter of 0.12-0.16 μm, but are usually excreted as a component of larger particles, which, depending on their size, can remain airborne for different lengths of time and be transported with the airflow for different distances.
The excreted aerosol particles change in size and composition depending on environmental conditions. The particles shrink as they pass from the respiratory tract into the ambient air due to evaporation of contained water. The exact processes leading to the formation and change of such aerosol particles depend on a large number of different factors and can hardly be predicted in individual cases.

The following conditions must be met for COVID-19 disease to be induced via aerosol particles:

The amount of infectious SARS-CoV-2 virus in the aerosol is large enough that human contact with the aerosol can, in principle, result in infection. This amount of virus (infectious dose) is currently unknown and probably depends on individual factors.

The virus-containing aerosol hits sensitive cells (e.g. cells of the respiratory tract, but also of the conjunctiva of the eyes) of an uninfected person.

Multiplication of the virus in these cells occurs.

Smaller particles in an aerosol tend to contain fewer viruses, but can remain suspended in the air for longer. This means they can pose a risk of infection over distances greater than 1-2 m and for longer periods of time. Our QooXoo air purifiers can filter even small aerosols, quickly and reliably. Aerosols in the above mentioned size of < 5 µm, are almost completely filterable by our HEPA filters (99.97%, 0.1 – 0.3 µm).

QooXoo GmbH has set itself the goal of making a significant contribution to the stabilization situation around the COVID crisis. QooXoo relies on technologies that have been tested in laboratories and in the market.

It is important to us that we do not create any additional risks for people in the vicinity of our devices via the filtering and deactivation mechanisms described below.

This basic conviction was the reason in the last year 2020 to search for an innovative, scalable and sustainable technology, which ensures fast and reliable “destruction” of viruses via the filtering of aerosols with cells infected by viruses, without accepting other risks for our health.

With the copper and silver anion enrichment of our filters, we bring a process to the market that is reliable, sustainable, safe and cost-optimized.

Disable and destroy viruses, how to do it?

The QooXoo virus filter has an additional very effective virus deactivation mechanism. The fine filter structures of the HEPA filter stop the viruses. Our special filter with copper and silver anions (high number of negatively charged metal ions) then ensures that the viruses are reliably destroyed (neutralized). This is important so that multiplication and infection can definitely no longer take place at the filter. Our unique filters can therefore be replaced without any problems. They are no longer highly infectious.

Résumé: Our devices therefore neither produce an increased ozone load via UV radiation, nor a hazard due to infectious filters. 

In order to quickly render harmless the affected aerosols floating in the room, it is important to create an optimal fluidic solution that quickly ensures the exchange of air throughout the room. The QooXoo air purifiers are therefore designed to implement a high volume of air at low noise.

Destruction of viruses by copper and silver ions:

The structure of viruses is quite simple. As a rule, a virus consists of its genetic material with protein coat (capsid) and an envelope:

  • Hereditary material (genome): The virus genome is composed of double-stranded or single-stranded nucleic acid in combination with certain proteins. A nucleic acid is a chain-like molecule that exists either as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA), depending on its sugar building block. Accordingly, a distinction is made between DNA viruses (such as herpes, smallpox or adenoviruses) and RNA viruses (such as influenza, hepatitis, measles, corona and HI viruses).
  • Capsid: This is the protein coat around the viral genome. Capsid and genome together are called nucleocapsid.
  • Envelope: Some viruses still have an outer envelope consisting of a lipid bilayer. It is partly derived from the cell membrane of the host cell (also a lipid bilayer) in which the virus in question originated. Part of the viral envelope may be special receptor proteins (“spikes”). They serve to attach the virus to a host cell.

On copper surfaces, for example, Human Coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E), which can lead to a variety of respiratory symptoms – including fatal pneumonia – is destroyed within a short time. On many conventional materials such as stainless steel, glass, plastic and ceramic tiles, on the other hand, it can survive for several days.

Inactivation of bacteria and viruses by metal ions occurs via chemical reactions, through direct or indirect reactions. Here is a simplified illustration:

  • In order for the metal ions to rapidly penetrate the interior via the surface, the copper and silver ions form a rapid bond at the membrane of the virus and destroy structures of nucleic acids and proteins and thus their functions. This leads directly to the deactivation (rendering harmless) of the virus.
  • Silver (silver ions) unfolds its bactericidal effect by blocking essential SH and NH2 groups, which in further consequence leads to the loss of the biologically important functions of the occurring proteins and the enzymes of the virus cells (host cells infected by the virus).

The two methods to render viruses harmless with a high degree of certainty

UV irradiation harmful?

This method is used in the medical field and reliably kills viruses and bacteria with high UV radiation. When the high UV radiation is generated, ozone is produced in the air, which at medium to higher concentrations, can cause irritation and damage to the respiratory tract. For this reason, this ozone is broken down again in the expensive clinical equipment. The UV radiation in freely available air purifiers outside of clinical applications is reduced in power UV radiation to such an extent that very little ozone is produced, but the destructive effect on viruses is also lost.

Silver/copper anion filter (Ag+/Cu+)

Inactivation of bacteria and viruses by metal ions takes place via chemical reactions outside or inside the cell, by direct or indirect reactions.

In order for the metal ions to rapidly penetrate into the cell via the surface, the copper and silver ions form a rapid and irreversible bond at the membrane of the virus and destroy structures of nucleic acids and proteins, which also disturbs the so-called osmotic balance. Silver develops its bactericidal effect by blocking essential SH and NH2 groups, which in turn leads to the loss of biologically important functions of the proteins and enzymes present in the virus cell (host cell affected by the virus).

Copper, in turn, acts both outside and inside the virus cell. One ability of copper, as an acid or base, is to accelerate displacement reactions. A high copper concentration leads to an additional loss of the permeability barrier of the cell membrane and thus to a quasi leakage of the cell, which favors the penetration of metal ions into the cell. As a result, the protein structures in the cell are altered so that they can no longer fulfill their functions. This in turn leads to cell death or inactivation of the virus. Copper can thus attack the respiratory enzymes in the cell wall of E. coli, for example.

Furthermore, copper can exert its anti-infective effect through the formation of so-called chelate complexes. Copper binds directly to the genetic material of the harmful cell, which also leads to a destruction of the structure and a blockade of the reproduction of the virus.

What is an ionizer?

The built-in ionizer electrostatically charges oxygen molecules from the air, so that the negatively charged ions can bind to the positively charged pollutant particles even < 3 μg and these become heavier and larger and can be more easily sucked into the air purifier and safely filtered. Viruses and bacteria can also be quickly bound in the air as well as molecules that cause unpleasant odors.

Studies show that ions charged by an ionizer can improve well-being. Ionized air in appropriate concentration is better absorbed by the lungs and provides the body with more energy.

They are especially recommended in urban environments due to the high levels of particulate matter, where the concentration of ions is much lower in enclosed spaces.

Is an air purifier useful for me?

Purchasing an air purifier makes sense for you if you want to do something good for your health. Everyone benefits from an indoor air purifier, whether in the home, office or gym. Especially allergy or asthma sufferers can alleviate symptoms with an air purifier, as allergy-causing particles such as pollen, dandruff, spores, etc. are filtered out of the indoor air. In the bedroom, an air purifier provides more comfortable and therefore more restful sleep, for more energy the next day.
